.Gandhi Seva Sangha (GSS), a registered society committed to social welfare and charitable services, was founded in 1946 with the vision of uplifting underprivileged and economically challenged communities. Located at Gandhi More, Sreebhumi, near Laketown and Dakshindari in Kolkata, GSS has been providing multifaceted and uninterrupted social welfare services for more than eight decades, particularly in the fields of health, education, and self-reliance. It is an apolitical, non-government, and non-commercial organization managed by a dedicated and dependable group of people.
Year 1946 – India stood on the threshold of independence, but the country was passing through a period of unrest, communal tension and uncertainty. A small school for children and adolescents was started at ‘Patharkol’ on Dakshindari Road, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of Education, Service and Self-Reliance. Gandhi Seva Sangha gradually took shape as an institution committed to the welfare of the local community.
Among its founding members were Yashoda Kumar Majumdar, Purnachandra Ghosh, Ramdeb
Mishra, Giriraj Bandyopadhyay, Durgacharan Dutta, Anantalal Dutta and Bankimchandra Daan, along
with many other socially committed individuals. Eminent people like Manikyaratan Guha Thakurta, Adhir Kumar Bose,
Gauranga Banik,, Prof. Gyan Chandra Dutta, J. S. Bachawat,
Hemendralal Kundu, Pranab Chandra Daan, Piyush Ghosh and R. L. Jaiswal have enormous contribution towards growth of this organisation. The legacy is continuing with present executive body , volunteers and well-wishers who are contributing to the uninterrupted 80 years journey of the organisation.
Thus the history of Gandhi Seva Sangha is not the story of a single person or a single project. It is a story built over decades by teachers, doctors, social workers, organisers, artists, donors, volunteers, community members and countless well-wishers
Our History
1946- 1956
In 1946 small school 'Pathshala' begins at 'Pathorkol' on Dakshindari Road for local children and adolescents. In 1949, the respected Daan family of Jorasanko formed a trustee body and donated approximately
two bighas of land. With support from the Dutta and Laha families and local residents, the Gandhi Seva Buniyadi
Vidyalaya was established. Gandhi Seva Sangha is formally registered as a public welfare organisation.
1956 - 1966
Adult Education Centre & Homeopathic Clinic started and the school was upgraded to a Junior School.
1966 - 1976
The school receives government recognition, expands to Junior High School level and begins women’s vocational education.
1976 - 1986
In 1977, the first floor of the school building was completed, and a women’s vocational education centre was established. In 1980 Sangha building construction got initiated. The building was completed in 1984 and inaugurated by the then Governor Uma Shankar Dikshit. Renowned sculptor Sunil Pal donated the bust of Mahatma Gandhi placed in front of the building.
1986 - 1996
1986 saw the beginning of a charitable allopathic medical centre. In 1987, an Outdoor Clinic and Community Health Service was established in the neighbouring Bidhan Colony with support from Oxfam and Lions Club. A Children’s Toy Library was established in 1990–91 in association with Lions Club, Lake Gardens. Photography training began in 1991, followed by the Shishubikash Kendra (Child Development Centre) in 1992. In 1994, its publication ‘Sebak’ was launched. Computer training began in 1995.
1996 - 2006
In 1998, an Eye Care Centre was established, while vocational training expanded to include SilkScreen Printing. In 2000, Manikya Mancha was established in memory of Manikyaratan Guha Thakurta, one of the Sangha’s long-standing leaders. In 2005 , Sangha took initiative for Cancer Awareness, Counselling and Guidance and Seba Nibas - a low cost residential facility for cancer patients got established.
2006 - 2016
In 2006–07, the general library underwent significant expansion and improvement with financial assistance from the Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation. Seva-Nibas expanded to include dormitory accommodation, cabins, kitchen and dining facilities. Further expansion took place in 2009, and the newly constructed section was inaugurated on 2 October 2012 with 25 rooms. Gandhi Seva Sadan hospital project begins and a separate trust got formed for the hospital. Rabindra & Swami Vivekanda 150th birth anniversary.
2016 - 2026
In 2016-17 Computer Center for under privileged students and elderly people got restarted. Arogyajan (ambulance) facility started for cancer patients. GSS Seva Sadan OPD got initiated. Physiotherapy center started in 2021. Seva Nibas extended to 3rd floor to accommodate 36 patients with common kitchen facility . Year 2023 witnessed beginning of 'Uttoran' - an initiative for betterment of elderly people's life. Lift service started for cancer patients. For vocational training one large hall room is built and multiple initiative have been taken towards self reliance. Air conditioning facility installed in Manikyamancha - turning into a very popular low cost venue for local organisations to arrange cultural or welfare programs. During this period Gandhi Seva Sangha has taken initiative to arrange multiple awareness sessional on environmental , health-care and social welfare in collaboration with different philanthropic organisations.
